Find the date and time in a Firebase push ID

Firebase Realtime Database creates a push ID when you add an item using push(). This 20-character key includes the time it was generated, accurate to the millisecond.

Paste a push ID below to see its date and time. The conversion happens in your browser and does not require a connection to Firebase.

A push ID generated for the current time is -JhLeOlGIEjaIOFHR0xd.

Enter the 20-character key, including any leading hyphen. Uppercase and lowercase letters are different.

How does a push ID contain a timestamp?

The first 8 characters store the number of milliseconds since January 1, 1970, UTC (the Unix epoch). The remaining 12 characters help make each ID unique.

The time comes from the device generating the ID, with a clock correction when connected to Firebase. It may differ from the time the data was saved or last updated.

This converter is for Realtime Database push IDs. Cloud Firestore's automatically generated document IDs do not contain a timestamp. A custom key may also fit the push ID format without storing a meaningful date.

Read Firebase's explanation of push IDs for more information.
